Design your own font. Whether you want to try your hand at creating each letter in Illustrator or attempt to create a font using letters you’ve found elsewhere, Birdfont is a free tool for Windows, Mac and Linux that allows you to create the vectors necessary and export ttf, eot or svg font file. Whether you want to create something elaborate – like a font made up entirely of birds – or scan your own calligraphy and build it into a font you can call your own. The program offers all the tools you need to make the vectors for individual letters. Paste in images and trace them or attempt to create vectors on your own.
One thing this tool can’t change, however, is that creating fonts is a lot of work. You’ll need to design an awful lot of characters, and you’ll need to make sure they all compliment each other. That none look out of place.
The interface can be a little confusing at first, but take some time to explore and you’ll figure it out. Create a new font, then you can start designing the individual letters. The statusbar at bottom explains what each button does, so take the time to read and you’ll be making fonts in no time.
